Costume - Han Solo (ANH) - Part 6

Phase 2 - Research - Boots

Double post for today!! The final piece of this costume I'm doing is the boots.

  • English style dress riding boots
  • Tall
  • No laces, buckles, or zippers.
  • Flat across top
  • Black Leather
  • Round Toe
  • Flat bottom
  • Optional: Boot Pulls on inside.

That's it for the research. Next, I'll move on to Phase 3. Where I'll plan out how I'm going to collect or construct all these pieces.

      • Three pieces - Middle and Corners
    • Flap
  • 5 front pockets.
    • All different sizes.
    • Upper right is crescent moon pocket.
      • Smaller rectangular "pen" pocket on top.
        • Stitched on sides and bottom.

Costume - Han Solo (ANH) - Part 4

Phase 2 - Research - Pants

  • Dark Navy Blue
  • Brushed Denim
  • No pockets
  • 5 Belt Loops (2-Front, 2-Side, 1-Back)
  • Pin Tuck down front of both legs.
  • Riding seam down back of seat/legs.
  • Red "Blood Stripes" down side of legs, over seam. Original stripes were uneven and slightly off-sized. General consensus is the stripes should be 1-Inch wide, 1/4-Inch tall, with 1/8-Inch gap between each stripe.

Costume - Han Solo (ANH) - Part 3

 Phase 2 - Research - Shirt

What I've learned about the shirt:
  1. Fabric is a Jersey Single-Knit Cotton, similar to a T-shirt fabric.
  2. Mandarin style collar. Straight edge. 2 Pieces. Stitched along top and front to prevent "poofing."
  3. Sleeves are hemmed and stop slightly before the wrist bone. No attached cuff.
  4. "V" opening in front of shirt comes down to middle or lower end of sternum.
  5. Shirt is made up of 6 main pieces. L Arms, R Arm, Front, Back, and 2 collar pieces. I can find no evidence that the back would have a seam across the shoulder blades. (Despite noticing other costumers do this.)

Costume - Han Solo (ANH) - Part 2

I'm currently in Phase 2 of my Han Solo (ANH) build. Phase 2 is research. I research each piece of the costume until I feel I can gleam no more from it. Sometimes this drifts into Phase 3 - Planning, as I tend to break down a piece while I study it.

Phase 2 - Research - Belt

So, I've come to the conclusion that I can no longer gleam anything useful about Han Solo's belt. So here's what I've discovered.

His belt appears to be a regular Men's belt. Nothing too fancy about it.
  1. Black (Leather is tan, painted black. Not even sure why this is even mentioned. Cow hide isn't black naturally.)
  2. 3 holes, evenly spaced around the whole belt, except for the last couple of inches.
  3. 2-Prongs only
  4. A faint depressed line along the top and bottom.
  5. Rectangular ring for the loop
  6. NO GROMMETS

So, that's all I've got. This is an item I could easily find online or make myself.

Costume - Han Solo (ANH) - Part 1

Greetings all!

I'm trying something new here. I'm going to blog/note/post progress on a costume. Hopefully this will help me stay a bit more organized and show off the progress I'm making. So, I'm going to blog about Han Solo. I need to create a Han Solo costume to wear for a project a friend of mine is doing. I've broken this process down into five phases.

Phase I - Conception

First, I need to decide which version of the costume I need to build. I'll actually need three different costumes by the end of the project, but for now, I'm going to focus on the A New Hope Han costume.

Phase II - Research! Research! Research!

This step will involve gathering lots of information, pictures, screencaps, and anything else I can find on building this costume.

Phase III - Planning

Next, I need to figure out what pieces of the costume I'll need to build/acquire. How I'm going to do it. What tools, rescources, friends, monies, and blood I'll need.

1) Jacket/Vest
2) Shirt
3) Pants
4) Boots
5) Belt (To hold the pants up!)

That's it! I don't need his weapon for this project, so I won't be focusing on the blaster, holster, or gun belt. I'll add that later if I decide to use the costume for something else.

Phase IV - Construction

In this phase, I'll begin to actually build/collect pieces for the costume.

Phase V - Refinement

Because I don't think any costume is really "done," anything in this phase is pretty much ready to wear. This also means I may be improving, upgrading, or replacing bits.
